ON MY WAY TO WORK - A project by CYM - 1998-1999
From July 1998 until August 1999 Cym had a usual 9-to-5 job at a friendly company in the east of Amsterdam. Every day she cycled the 7 kilometers on her bike from Amsterdam-West through the center of Amsterdam to the 300 years old building beyond the bridge at the Diemerzeedijk in Amsterdam-East.
Around the same time Cym bought her very first digital camera, an Apple QuickTake. With fully charged batteries it was possible to take around 24 photos until the batteries were empty. Just enough to document her way to work. From October 1998 until August 1999 Cym took her very first digital camera a few times with her on her bicycle, to document her way from home to work.
Already in 1999 she presented the photos online as a small website. She carefully put the photos together on four pages, one for each season, together with an index page, with descriptions added to each photo. Each page is a composition of photos from that day. The photos together form her very first online city portrait.
These photos are the beginning of what would become an enourmous collection of digital photos. At that time she wasn't aware yet of how digital photography would change the world. These web pages were each completely designed and coded by hand, in plain HTML, giving each page its individual character.
